In mid April, a few members of the sub-branch Committee had another positive meeting with Cheltenham MP, Martin Horwood. This meeting discussed on how best to protect pubs which were at most risk from possible re-development. As an interim way forward – Martin would approach Cheltenham Borough Council and see if they would put forward a resolution – similar to that recently adopted by Gloucester City Council in relation to nominating pubs as a community asset under the Localism Act.

A meeting with the Tewkesbury MP Laurence Robertson has also taken place, as some of our sub-branch pubs are in his constituency. Details will be in the June edition of Cheltenham Cheers!

Real Cider is starting to become big in Cheltenham! A few months back Tippler hosted a feature on Real Ciders and Perrys.

Over the last few months a several new venues have opened up in Cheltenham. Crazy 8’s, The Boston Tea Party and Grumpy Whiskers.

Crazy Eights is a new bar in the Prom. They are located under and to the rear of the new restaurant 131 opposite the Queens Hotel. They are doing London Pride and Stroud Organic on draft, 2 pumps for each. We have seen beers spotted on beer spotter from Camden Brewery at that location as well!

The Boston Tea party is located at 45-49 Clarence Street which some may remember that the Belgian Monk was located at this address in the late 90’s. This venue appears to be an expansion to a small chain. They list bottled beer and cider on their menu which includes Southville Hop by Bristol Beer Factory and a Sandford Orchards Cider! Two craft ale pumps are available one hosting a beer the other a lager.

Grumpy Whiskers is located in Winchcombe Street near the abandoned Odeon Cinema in what used to be a Mexican restaurant. We have recently listed this venue in our Cheltenham Real Cider Guide as they consistently have 5 real ciders available. Currently Grumpy Whiskers is 14th on Trip Adviser’s list for Cheltenham restaurants! They have a house band and a food menu which features some very interesting Burger and Waffle options.

Last month we announced that the Kings Head in Bishops Cleeve will be opening an outside bar for ales and ciders to support the Cleeve Street Fayre on June 1st. This month we can further report that they are now a CAMRA LocAle venue. This means that they will regularly have a real ale on sourced from a brewery with in 30 miles of their location.
